ABOVE Ian Botham – simply the best?

Would a more considered approach from Harry Brook and the batters that followed have seen England over the line in the final Test, and is this symptomatic of not having the ultimate killer instinct to win games?
David Gibbs, via email
Definitely not Harry Brook, because the shot he got out to is very successful for him. When he runs down the pitch, he rarely gets out to it. We also used to criticise Kevin Pietersen for it. There will be a time when you cannot just say, “That’s the way we play,” though… when you need to play the situation. On that last morning at the Kia Oval it did look like the pressure got to the lower order a bit. England rarely get the chase wrong; it was a huge total, and they nearly did it. Fair play to India, they got the ball moving around and bowled beautifully.
