Over the years, we have looked through countless images, often debating for many hours which should be used to illustrate the stories in Travel Africa. Similarly, most of you will return from Africa with thousands of photos to narrow down to your favourites. So, what makes one picture stand out above the others? Why does this picture of a meerkat in the Kalahari catch the eye more than so many others? Of course, there are many aspects that need to combine — and for that you often need a lot of patience and a bit of luck. We’re grateful to all the photographers and the image libraries who have supplied us with photos over the last 25 years. One of the very best is Nature Picture Library, which is headed up by Helen Gilks, who also managed the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition for ten years. Helen has more experience than most at assessing images, from some of the world’s very best photographers.
