The recent passing of The Chieftains’ frontman and founder Paddy Moloney brought many tributes from musicians who worked with him over the years. A most unassuming man for the limelight, Paddy accumulated a long list of collaborators throughout his long career. A running joke perhaps could be, “Who didn’t he work with..?”
His vision for extending the possibilities of traditional Irish music was remarkable – especially on albums such as The Long Black Veil, which featured such notables as The Rolling Stones, Ry Cooder and Sting. The Chieftains’ 1988 release of Irish Heartbeat with Van Morrison leading on vocals was another of their career landmarks. Paddy’s legacy couldbe described as one of fearlessness to explore and expand boundaries that might not have been approved by some traditional music purists. His work was certainly pioneering in putting Irish artistry on a global scale.
