Sir,
Year on year we return to Arran and yet, after 50 years, we still hadn’t climbed Goatfell. So this was the year. On a beautiful day we climbed and pushed our way to the top and felt exhilarated as we stood on the summit.
On the way down, we found Davy Ballantyne’s anvil discarded to the side of the path. We thought it a great pity that Davy’s amazing feat has been left without recognition or celebration. Surely such a significant achievement should be ‘set in stone’ for all to wonder at as they stand at the trig point on the summit of Goatfell.
