I first became familiar with the story of Holding the Man when I saw it as a play, at London's Trafalgar Studios in 2009. It was the first time I’d cried — real, whole-hearted tears — in a theatre. My companion was alarmed by my reaction and apologised for taking me to see the production. But there was nothing to apologise for: I was in my early twenties, not long out, and I’d finally seen a visceral, emotional truth to life as a gay man.
