Aviation Specials  |  US Navy Carrier Jets of the 1980s
Welcome to this visual celebration of a decade that, for many, represents the high-water mark of naval power. Step into a world of steam, salt spray, and the thunder of afterburners—a world that is captivating.
The 1980s witnessed a dramatic aesthetic shift: the transition from colourful, high-visibility paint schemes of the 1960s and 1970s — with their vibrant squadron insignia and white bellies — to the “grey ghosts” clad in the Tactical Paint Scheme (TPS).
This bookazine, edited by aviation artist Mads Bangsø, is not intended to be an in-depth historical document or a dense technical manual. Instead, it is a curated overview of the significant events and the legendary airframes that defined the decade.
Mads said: “My goal is to capture the ‘feel’ of the 80s fleet, providing a gateway for enthusiasts and a nostalgic journey for veterans. It is my sincere hope that this volume will be the first of many, followed by similar books exploring the unique character of other decades. I am immensely proud to put my signature on this publication. It represents a lifetime of passion, and I hope it ignites that same spark in you.”
