James and Paula Brown have stumbled upon an unusual site in what appears to be a former sandstone quarry. Mike Dade explores whether it could be the ideal plot for their self build

WHO James and Paula Brown

WHAT The Browns have spotted a plot of land that could provide the perfect opportunity for their self build ambitions. It comes with detailed planning permission to create a contemporary dwelling, but they want to find out if they could alter the proposed plans to create a home that meets their needs.

WHERE Sussex

James and Paula Brown are looking for a plot that’s suitable for them to build a very contemporary dwelling. They’d like somewhere unusual and with plenty of character to set off the design of their new home – not just an infill in a row of houses. Such sites aren’t exactly commonplace in the south east of England but a unique piece of land, in what appears to be a former quarry, has come on the market. Could this be the right opportunity?
