What’s All the Fuss About...
HDMI 2.2
Faster refresh rates at higher resolutions are coming – eventually
What is HDMI 2.2?
It’s the latest version of the cable standard that connects our TVs, monitors, gaming consoles and streaming devices. Announced on 6 January at the CES show in Las Vegas, it doubles the bandwidth of HDMI 2.1 from 48Gbps to 96Gbps. This means it supports higher resolutions and refresh rates, such as 4K at 480Hz, 8K at 240Hz, and even 10K at 120Hz.
Is that quite a big jump then?
Yes, as represented by the illustration right, provided by the HDMI Licensing Administrator. No, it’s not the world’s most impractically designed earplug, but a representation of how HDMI has improved since version 1.4 (released in 2009), which had a bandwidth of 10.2Gbps.
