As we approach the 30th anniversary of the enactment of Section 28, the 1988 amendment which stated that a local authority should not “intentionally promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship”, many of us are still feeling the effects of that legislation. And while the UK government reviews its recent consultation on sex and relationship education in schools, we thought it a good time to celebrate the everyday people who are writing their own stories. Whether parents, teachers, carers or organisations, as the mainstream conversation around gender, sexuality, and young people struggles to gain traction, let’s get behind those working to create a more inclusive and diverse world for children and young people now.
