It’s fashionable for job interviewers to ask what you’re reading at the moment. Your recruiter will warn you to name a book connected to the role you’re applying for and suggest you add a personal reflection that makes your choice sound credible. So a model answer might be: “I’m currently reading the second edition of Mastering Salesforce CRM Administration. I’m finding it quite the pageturner, although the characters don’t have the same emotional range as in the first edition.”
Try to freestyle though and the chances are you’ll give away more than you perhaps intended. If you suggest Macbeth, Cider With Rosie or The Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde, you’re pretty much admitting that you haven’t read a book since Year 10 – and even then it was only the revision notes. If you come up with Carol, Gone Girl or The Maze Runner, well then, you haven’t really read them, have you now? Hmm? No, watching the film on Netflix doesn’t count… A more significant question might be, “Can you name a book that changed you?”
