Capturing atmosphere within a piece of art is not easy, and miniature art is far from the exception. There’s the setting, the lighting, the fine detail; all combining to evoke that sense of time and place. The passage of time is ironically one of the few constants in an ever-changing world; the turn of the seasons always guaranteed. Robina Patterson’s seasonal diorama perfectly captures the essence of winter.
There’s the smell of rich hot chocolate in the cold air, the crunch of freshly fallen snow beneath our feet, and that strange, almost eerie light you only ever get in the darkest days of winter. The sun tries hard to light our way to springtime, unable to reach the dizzy heights of a few short months ago, its warmth on our back little more than a distant memory.
“I grew up with long cold winters, and staying inside for months gets boring fast, so out we went,” says Robina, reflecting on her own idyllic childhood memories, and the inspiration behind the scene.
