Sugar has become public food enemy number one, and the government is following advice from the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN), a group of eminent scientists, to set new limits. It considers that slashing the sugar in our diets is an essential way to help people lose weight.
NOT ALL SUGAR IS THE SAME
It’s important to understand there are two types:
● INTRINSIC SUGARS
These are sugars that occur naturally – they’re found in whole, unaltered fruit and vegetables. They’re surrounded by the plant cell wall, which must be broken down before the body can make use of the sugar. This means they tend to take longer to enter the blood stream than free sugars (below) and are therefore less likely to cause spikes in blood sugar.
