Remembered as the Virgin Queen who defied convention, Elizabeth I famously never married but rumours of alleged lovers have surrounded her for centuries. Historian Dr Estelle Paranque’s new book, Elizabeth I of England through Valois Eyes: Power, Representation and Diplomacy in the Reign of the Queen, 1558–1588, suggests that the English Queen may have developed a close relationship with a French ambassador.
