WINTER fitness fixes
Worrying about your horse’s fitness going down the pan over the winter months? Never fear, we’ve got some ideas to help you keep him in great shape
Wet weather, boggy ground and a lack of light can all contribute to reduced time in the saddle. As many of us aren’t lucky enough to have access to indoor arenas, all-weather gallops, or transport on a regular basis, how on earth can we be expected to keep our horses’ fitness in check with just the arena as a backdrop? Well, the key is commitment and planning ahead, even on the dullest of days. We’re brimming with ideas on how you can keep your horse ticking over, no matter your facilities, time constraints or levels of inspiration!
Problem: Lacking motivation
Preparing a rough schedule for what you’re going to do with your horse and when, week on week, can help provide some direction and purpose for your riding. Factor in days you’ll have more hours to spare, like weekends or annual leave, and where you’re tighter for time.
It’s motivating to plan ahead and it’ll be easier to make sure your horse is getting the correct workload for him. It makes sense to consult your weather app in the planning stages, but remember that conditions are far from predictable. Just like it’s okay to give yourself a day off when you’re really not feeling it, you’re entitled to give yourself a break on a rainy day, too. Plus, it’s generally safer not to ride in severe weather, regardless of your plans.
