A LIFETIME ago I was a shopgirl working after school for I think 50p an hour in a paper shop, I am certain that my employers were Scotland’s premier newsagents; and ours was also a toyshop. We’d Britain’s metal tractors, Airix kits, Commando comics, partworks of creations like ‘Golden Hands’ and the Brownie and Guiding Magazines. There was The People’s Friend and My Weekly too, the Scots Magazine and at Christmas couthiness to the max with Wullie or The Broons. Mums saved up in the Christmas club, for obvious reasons.
