Bring back our Brus

I am an English woman, living in Wales, writing an article for a Scottish magazine. I have lived here for nearly 10 years and am happier than I ever was in England. So I would definitely vote Yes if Wales decided to leave the UK.

To become free from the UK though, first we need to free ourselves from the restraints we have unknowingly allowed to be put on us. Things we have been allowing to happen to us for years. One of the latest is the sugar tax. This is something that is particularly annoying for me as I am allergic to artificial sweeteners. Even if I wasn’t allergic I would not knowingly consume chemicals. And I am not the only one who is intolerant to artificial sweeteners. There are thousands (probably closer to millions) who cannot (or will not) consume them and probably many, many more who are unaware that they even have an intolerance and have put their migraines down to stress, their stomach problems down to IBS or their extreme pain and fatigue down to Fibromyalgia.

About 2 months ago I visited a friend of mine who I had not seen for a while. I was shocked at how she looked. She was moving as if she had been starched. When I asked her if she was OK she told me she was in a lot of pain in most of her body and that she was having problems doing the simplest task, such as filling a kettle or washing her hair in the shower. I told her it sounded very much like the symptons of Fibromyalgia and she confirmed that she was in the process of being tested for it. Unfortunately there is no exact test that can be done for Fibromyalgia, so she was getting tested for everything else before the doctor could diagnose Fibromyalgia. She was waiting for an appointment to be tested for Polymyalgia when I saw her.
