From fires to floods to snow, ice and explosions, we explore some of the most serious disasters in Canadian history. Of course, when things go wrong, there are always people there to help. Many of those helpers were needed when a ship carrying military explosives blew up on Dec. 6, 1917, causing the terrible Halifax Explosion. A few decades later, on the Prairies, farm families saw their dreams turn to dust as a lack of rain combined with grasshoppers, hail and bad prices caused the Dust Bowl years of the Great Depression.
