Many of those helpers were needed when a ship carrying military explosives blew up on Dec. 6, 1917, causing the terrible Halifax Explosion. A few decades later, on the Prairies, farm families saw their dreams turn to dust as a lack of rain combined with grasshoppers, hail and bad prices caused the Dust Bowl years of the Great Depression.
