Linux has a plethora of applications for backing up, transferring and synchronising data between folders, disks and computers. Look under the hood and chances are you’ll find they’re powered by Rsync.
The command-line utility has been a mainstay of the open source ecosystem since before the turn of the century. What makes Rsync so unique is the Rsync algorithm, which compares the local and remote files one small block at a time using checksums, and only transfers the blocks that are different. If you’re copying over the network, Rsync compresses these tiny blocks on the fly before sending them over the wires, which further helps cut down the file transfer time. For such network transfers, Rsync is usually clubbed with SSH to encrypt the data transfer for added security.
