MEMORY FREQUENCY has long been the realm of marketing gurus and PR specialists, those whose task it is to upsell RAM and keep that monetar y train flowing. After all, in ever y other component, frequency has a significant impact on performance and progress.
By that definition, it’s surely logical that memor y follows the same route?
Not quite. For a long time, Intel’s processors benefited little from memor y speed. It was only AMD with its Ryzen processors, which tied its own PCB interconnect to memor y speed directly, that led to frequency being wor thwhile for CPU per formance. That’s not to say memor y speed wasn’t warranted, just that capacity and real-world latency were king. If you were rendering massive video files or dabbling in complex database tasks, frequency did have an effect.
