Locomotive construction continues as the little 3½ inch gauge shunter by Neil Wyatt gains a gear train. In a larger scale, Terry Woodward describe the front end of the attractive tank engine, Halstead and Terry Holland makes piston, rods and piston rings for the Barclay well tanks. And, larger again, Peter King sets out to make some ‘alternative’ bogies in 7¼ inch gauge, this time based on bar frames; he provides working drawings to allow you to follow his design.
Whilst still with locomotives, Brian Baker makes progress with his steam raising blower - the perfect project for those brand new to the techniques involved in model making.
The Allan Brothers engine offers us an opportunity to indulge in some very fine scale model making as Frank Cruickshank tackles the fuel needle valve.
A new series starts as Chris Boll offers his BollAero 49 Glowplug Engine. Chris is an aero modeller of some standing but now turns his attention to making a deceptively powerful little engine for flight.
John A. Stewart uses some very simple CNC methods to produce custom spanners for use in the construction of his Shay locomotive - techniques that may inspire you if you are at the early stages of getting to grips with CNC. Oh - the time you will save!
Roger Vane has produced a useful attachment if you are looking for very fine control. No more broken drills!
Away from the workshop, Ralph Oliver reminisces about his experiences of post war missile testing and Martin Wallis takes us on a tour of some of the 2016 summer season of traction engine rallies. Our cover photo this time comes from this report which will continue next issue.
