FREDERIKSBERG. DL/LP
Danish saxophonist’s new band’s otherworldly debut.
Every player gets a chance to shine on Søren Skov Orbit’s restless first full-length. Less psychedelic than Skov’s fusion past in Mythic Sunship, his full-toned tenor and soprano melodies nonetheless traverse inner and outer space on lengthy, evocative standouts Reflections Of Rif and Notifications Of Nothingness, with subtle nods to Albert Ayler, Archie Shepp and Hans Dulfer along the way. Much of the scene setting comes via Peder Vind’s heavily reverbed and hypnotising piano motifs (at his most ghostly and ethereal on Orbiting), while bassist Casper Nyvang Rask steals the show on The Valley and drummer Rune Lohse and percussionist Ayi Solomon unleash an unstoppable rhythmic tour-de-force on Naration. Otherworldly modal jazz with Sun Ra spaciousness, a propulsive, Afrobeat pulse and surrealist touches, Adrift is constantly evolving.
