SIGNIFICANT progress has been made on the construction of the replacement ferry for the link between the island of Kerrera and the mainland south of Oban at Gallanach.
The new ferry, named MV Carvoria, is being constructed by Malakoff Limited at its shipyard in Shetland for Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL). Steelwork fabrication is now drawing to a close after a period of intensive construction and work is turning towards fitting out the vessel in preparation for sea trials, due to begin on August 7.
Kevin Hobbs, chief executive of CMAL, said: ‘The ceremony marks the official start of the build of the new ferry and we’re delighted to see construction get under way. We will work closely with Malakoff to maintain progress on the build and we look forward to bringing the new vessel to the islanders on Kerrera later this summer.’
