Were you lucky enough to swim with your parents when you were a kid? As well as trips to the local swimming baths with my dad every Sunday, my summers were spent swimming in the sea on holiday with my brother and sister. This issue we meet families who swim together, as well as the swimmers who have made their own swimming family. Not all children are so lucky to have the opportunity to swim; we meet the founders of Tankproof, a US nonprofit working to provide access, equity and opportunity to underprivileged children through swimming lessons. Also in the US, we hear about the misguided attempt to ban open water swimming from historic Walden Pond in Massachusetts.
As I sit writing this, summer is definitely here. In our Travel section we explore islands in the river Thames and Ella Foote looks at watery activities for all the family to enjoy. And in this issue’s Gear section we look at children’s wetsuits and goggles to keep your kids happy in the open water.
Last month we were very excited to be able to host the Outdoor Swimmer Henley Swim Festival – a family-friendly event in a beautiful stretch of the Thames. Read all about it in this issue’s Events section, as well as comprehensive event listings to help you plan your 2021 swims.
We hope you enjoy the issue.
