Green cloud
Don’t entrust your jobs to dirty, energy-hungry servers: Darien Graham-Smith looks at the green scene
Go on then – what exactly is a “green cloud”?
Good question – it’s not a defined standard, or a packaged product, but more of an ideal. A truly “green cloud” would be one that could process all your workloads with no carbon emissions and no impact on the climate. Needless to say, you won’t find a service like that in the real world, but some get closer than others. Quantifying how green a particular service is can be tricky, however; by its nature, the cloud constitutes multiple clusters of services spread across different locations, all with their own environmental characteristics.
