Practical Fishkeeping  |  Practical Fishkeeping Magazine January 2021
I’ve kept fish for over four decades now, since I was gifted my first goldfish on my fourth birthday. In that time, and despite the vast range of species I’ve kept, worked with and bred, I’ve still barely begun my fishkeeping journey.
Something I love about my job is that every month, my contributors bring me new information that I never knew. In this issue, Tai Strietman has taught me all about fish behaviour in the wild, Michel Keijman has vicariously taken me into African rivers, Jack Heathcote has shown me just what you can get away with when you have space for Rift Valley cichlids, and Steve Grant has explained the origins of the name of a fish I adore.
And then there are the thrills that never go away. The tank on page 62 was set up for this issue, and as I write this, my Julidochromis have just spawned. I have a tank of fry and I’m as excited as I was the first time I bred these fish at the age of 13. What an exhilerating hobby!
