When I was an active little girl I used to cut out pictures of female athletes from the sports section of the newspaper, on the rare occasion they were there, and stick them on the wall next to my bed. As an 11 year old, I wanted to be David Beckham, so I had my hair cut into a messy mohawk with blonde tips and wore a Manchester United jersey everywhere. Then the movie Bend it Like Beckham came out and suddenly it was possible to want to be the two girls in the movie, who were on their way to being pro footballers. It still seemed too good to be true; it was a movie after all.
