As Silent Skies, Evergrey’s Tom S Englund and Redemption’s Vikram Shankar have cornered the market in stately, new age-adjacent prog-pop. Dormant continues down the path they embarked upon on 2020’s debut album Satellites and 2022’s Nectar. The format remains the same: lush, billowing music powered by Englund’s emotive voice and Shankar’s evocative keyboards. There’s a sense of the quietly epic to Construct, New Life and AOR-edged anthem The Real Me, but it never spills over into bombast. The pair are equally effective when they dial things right down, as on the sparse Rest, with its haunting piano and sense of inner tranquility, although the ballad Light Up The Dark is a little too soft-centred and schmaltzy for its own good.
