Elizabeth Heathcote discovers a restful idyll in Orkney’s wondrous wilderness.

When I set off for Orkney, I was tired deep down. Having raised two teenagers, it felt as though I had spent years concentrating on what had to be done to get by, and their needs. But now, as they sit on the cusp of adulthood, their focus on an independent future, it felt right for me to peel away, too, and spend some time rediscovering myself.

For me, that will always mean walking in the wilderness. We live in a big city, but my heart belongs to quiet, wild places. Orkney, an archipelago off the north coast of Scotland with an extraordinary history, had always appealed so, when the chance came to discover the islands on a guided group walking holiday, I leapt at it.
