INTERVIEW RIN HAMBURGH PHOTOGRAPH SEAN MALYON
Getting a degree has always been on my bucket list, but I got married and had children young, so life quickly went down a different path. When I was 35, I realised that I was stuck in a rut. I had four children and a part-time job, so it was basically get up, go to work, come home, sort out the kids, then be too tired to do anything else. On my days at home, I just did housework.
One thing I did do was lead a Guide unit once a week. One day, I was talking to a colleague at work about what I was planning for the girls and she said, ‘You’re so wasted here, you should be a teacher and do something more than this.’ I knew she was right, but I needed something to kick me out of my comfort zone. In the end, that came in the form of redundancy, which gave me the time to step back and work out what I wanted to do.
