FOLLOWING reports in October that Tramway Terrace in Douglas, Isle of Man, was in such poor condition it would have to be demolished (RM, December) it has since emerged that the building can be saved.
Concerns over the condition of the terrace, which is located in front of the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway stables and incorporates an arch giving access to the stables, was such that the tramway operating season was ended prematurely. Atender exercise to find firms able to undertake demolition of the terrace, built in 1877 as part of the tramway’s stable complex and in Manx Government ownership since 2018, then commenced.
However, in view of the registered status of the terrace buildings (registered building consent is required from Manx planning authorities before any demolition or alterations to a protected building can take place) a survey was commissioned by the Isle of Man Government’s Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture from an accredited conservation engineer.
