Charter train incident may lead to long-distance narrow gauge line’s partial abandonment.
THE derailment of a steam charter train on the famous 750mm gauge La Trochita (which literally translates as ‘the little gauge’), better known as‘The Old Patagonia Express’ route in Southern Argentina on November 11, may mark the end of operations on part of the 423km (263 mile) route which was built in stages from 1923 to 1945.
The train derailed on the last day of a multi-day charter on the route run by USA-based Trains & Travel International (T&TI) with 45 participants from the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and Europe. Of these, 22 passengers were from UK-based PTG Tours. Several people were injured with a few needing hospital treatment.
