The first of the 36 Class 398 ‘Citylink’ tram-trains being built by Stadler for use on the South Wales Metro lines have begun active testing (two unidentified sets are pictured). The three-car units can run on rail and tram lines using overhead or battery power. Each can carry more than 250 passengers and run at up to 62mph (100kph). Passenger use is due to begin in 2024, and they will be used on the Rhondda, Merthyr and Cardiff City lines plus the Cardiff Bay branch. The fleet will be based at a new depot at Taff’s Well, about six miles north of Cardiff, where Class 398 deliveries began in March.
