Further Exploration of Orb Phenomena in Jaspers (Part II)

In Part I of this article, which was published in the June 2019 issue of Rock & Gem, a three-stage model of orb formation in chemical jaspers was discussed. In Part II, jaspers that display morecomplex manifestations of orb-based phenomena are the focus.

Different Appearances of Orb Structure

The basic orb shape was introduced in Figure 1 (Part I). Figure 6 shows another perspective, namely one with a series of orbs spread out in an array. Figure 6a shows a Bruneau Jasper with a series of orbs. Note the oscillating ripples associated with this series, both above and below the main orbs. Figure 6b shows a Blue Mountain Jasper containing a number of diferent sized orbs that formed in a less orderly array. Visible are faint horizontal lines mentioned earlier and the debris at the bottom, which represents material that has fallen from the cavity walls before the horizontal lines and the orbs formed.
