Romania’s women picked up an impressive two world championship gold medals in Sarasota in 2017. Is this only the beginning?



At the 2017 World Rowing Championships women’s eights final, Romania, with an average age of just 24, had the youngest boat in the race. Racing in lane four, flanked by New Zealand, Canada and the indomitable United States women in lane two, Romania led the final from start to finish. Their win put an end to the golden streak maintained by the US women’s eight since 2006 at all world championship and Olympic races. Canada claimed silver and New Zealand bronze. The Romanians’ performance may have taken many by surprise in 2017, but with the advantage of hindsight and a closer inspection, perhaps it shouldn’t have been so unexpected. Let’s look at the facts.
