GB Rowing HQ, Caversham April 14-15

As national teams emerge from the long winter training block and look ahead to the first World Rowing Cup in Belgrade in June, the start of the international rowing season, they must first select the squads that will fly the flags.

It can be one of the toughest tests in a career for an international athlete. Before racing the rest of the world, they must first race their own teammates and friends, behind closed doors and away from the public eye.

Row360 was fortunate to be invited behind the scenes of the British rowing team’s final selection regatta at their home training base in Caversham in April. Following 2k erg tests, the sweep team was split into pairs selected by coaches, while scullers took to their singles, to race off in a 2k regatta. The format is a 1,900m time trial, followed by side by side, six lane, 2k semi–finals and finals.
