Anyone expecting Eternals to be an Avengers Mark II superteam affair is in for a surprise – though not as much as Chloé Zhao fans expecting another Nomadland.
Welcome to the MCU at its most cosmic, in a film that doesn’t exactly rewrite franchise rules, but does bend them a little.
It’s based on a grandiose ’70s comic created by legendary artist/ writer Jack Kirby in the post-2001: A Space Odyssey sci-fi climate of powerful celestial beings directing the evolution of the universe, with some nods to Neil Gaiman’s 2006 reworking. It’s a far from faithful adaptation of either, but the changes made to the mythology create some powerful twists, which should leave both fans and newcomers equally gobsmacked (or utterly dismissive of cosmic claptrap, depending on your tolerance for mumbo jumbo).
