A fur-covered alien from the planet Melmac with a penchant for eating pussy – the household feline variety, of course – doesn’t necessarily scream Saturday night family viewing, yet it’s up there with Doctor Who for me. ALF always invokes waves of nostalgia, not just of tuning into ITV with my family but also of a time when I was becoming acutely aware of merchandising.
