074 FLYWHEELS
Whether single or dual mass, if you have a manual Porsche 911 then you’ll have one fitted. But what is a flywheel and how does it work?
The 911 is the same as every ‘ordinary’ car in that it needs a way to transfer engine rotation from the crankshaft to the gearbox. One part that performs that task is the flywheel.
In basic terms, it’s a flat, weighted metal disc bolted to the rear of the crankshaft that the clutch works against. Press the clutch pedal down, and the clutch plate lifts off the flywheel, thereby disengaging the connection between engine and transmission. Lift a foot off the clutch pedal, and the clutch pressure plate presses against the flywheel, connecting the engine to transmission.
