In the 1980s, Porsche used a 930 Turbo body as a running prototype for its Formula 1 engine. A mule was built, but never developed and, because strictly speaking it was McLaren’s property, it was duly returned to McLaren’s Woking base at the end of the contract. To use up the remaining stock of TAG Formula 1 engines, Porsche had contemplated installing them in the then current 911 Turbo, the 930, but development complications and the company’s growing preoccupation with its financial position meant the idea was abandoned.
