If you’re one of the many people who yearn for the days of cheap, simple off-road vehicles, this issue of 4x4 has something right up your street. Starring on the front cover is the MWM Spartan – a version of the legendary UAZ 469 which is now on sale in Britain.

The 469 was launched in the same year as the Land Rover Series III, and this issue is also graced by one of the most beautiful examples of a late leaf-sprung Landy we’ve ever seen. Restored and remanufactured by Falcon Design Germany, every part is a work of art.

The Volkswagen T-Roc Cabriolet is quite the looker, too, and we’ve got a full test of the latest model from the Wolfsburg school of SUVs. At the opposite end of the scale, we’ve also been admiring a no-fills Shogun that represents the real-world end of the laning scene – and looking back on a Suzuki Samurai that was modified for comp safari racing then modified again for winch challenges.

If what you really yearn for is adventure, on the other hand… well, we’re going to make you yearn some more. At the height of lockdown, we started compiling a three-part guide to 75 of the world’s best destinations for overland travel – and this month, the first of those finally comes to light! Be warned, though, it’ll give you a serious case of wanderlust…

Oh, and on that subject we’re delighted to say that our green lane roadbooks are back. After a big enforced layoff, we started by pointing our Isuzu D-Max in the direction of Salisbury to tackle the Ox Drove and some of its surrounding lanes. Fortunately, white trucks don’t show up the scratches…

Since lockdown, there has been a huge growth in the number of people getting into camping, the outdoors and enjoying an off-grid lifestyle. More and more, as a society we want to get away. Away from the relentlessness of a working life that has increasingly invaded our homes; away from the tyranny of always-on electronics and ever-watchful social media; away from the pressure to be busy, to be productive, to be available.

When your every waking hour is spent feeling hunted, just disappearing into the countryside for the weekend is a blessed relief. And if you’re in a 4x4, you can disappear further away and deeper into it. Overlander 4x4 reflects Britain’s new-found interest in an outdoor lifestyle.

We’re not a magazine about camping, but a magazine about the sort of adventures that involve it. Primarily, we focus on overlanding – showcasing both trip-of-a-lifetime expeditions as well as adventures that are more modest and, for most of us, more attainable. As always with anything four-wheel drive, it’s going to be a journey worth making, so join us for the adventure.

As a subscriber you'll receive the following benefits:

•  A discount off the RRP of your magazine
•  Your magazine delivered to your device each month
•  You'll never miss an issue
•  You’re protected from price rises that may happen later in the year

You'll receive 13 issues during a 1 year Overlander 4X4 magazine subscription.

Note: Digital editions do not include the covermount items or supplements you would find with printed copies.
