Sixty years ago, on August 8th, 1963, the largest-ever robbery committed in Britain happened. It quickly became known as the Great Train Robbery – and the names of many of the culprits were subsequently written into the nation’s criminal folklore. Bruce Reynolds, Ronnie Biggs, Buster Edwards, Charlie Wilson: just some of the 15 masked men who attacked the Glasgow to London Royal Mail train. In the space of some 20 minutes, the gang stole 119 mailbags and escaped with a haul of more than £2.5 million – the equivalent of £45 million in today’s money. It was, therefore, a sensational heist, one which dominated the front pages of the national newspapers as investigators went on the hunt for the guilty men.
