MICHIGAN’S TOM HARMON REMAINS ONE OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL’S GREATEST DO-IT-ALL LEGENDS78 YEARS AFTER HIS HEISMAN TROPHY-WINNING SEASON.

The California fan who made his way onto the field was identified as Harold Brennan. He was the last line of defense for the Golden Bears, but he failed miserably trying to tackle Michigan’s Tom Harmon at the goal line. Brennan shouldn’t feel too bad, though. Harmon evaded six other would-be tacklers (actual California players) on the 86-yard run to the end zone, making them look just as foolish.

It’s one of the most memorable moments in Harmon’s stellar college career. The Wolverines easily dispatched California 41-0 in that opener for the 1940 season. It also was Harmon’s 21st birthday and a terrific debut for what would be his Heisman Trophy-winning senior year. He accounted for 31 points, scoring four touchdowns, throwing another, and kicking four extra points—a typical performance, honestly.
