I’ve been lucky enough to use motorhomes – from the most basic campervans to the ultimate in luxury liners – all over the world, but some of the most memorable trips have been in A-classes. Perhaps, it’s simply that when you motor along, seeing everything in widescreen, the journey is as enjoyable as the end destination.
Four years ago, I spent a fabulous couple of weeks travelling through Denmark in a Hymer ML-I. That ’van hit the sweet spot of great comfort (and storage for a young family) without being too big on the road. Slimmer than most coachbuilts and under 7m long, but powered by the Merc V6 diesel, it was a joy to drive.
Delving deeper through the little grey cells takes me back to what was then the most expensive motorhome I’d ever tested – a Concorde Charisma. In winter in southern Germany there was snow everywhere but on board it was like being in a luxury apartment. One with a different view outside each and every day. Then there was the A-class Pilote that I drove through Norway – the awe-inspiring vistas of the fjords would just not have been the same through a van-sized windscreen.
