Q Can you recommend any radio programmes, TV series or films about running?
A On the Run is a fantastic three-part series available on BBC Sounds that charts the history of running from prehistory to the present day.
Hosted by the writer, poet and runner Helen Mort, it features a wealth of guests including the running historian Roger Robinson and Christopher McDougall, the author of Born to Run.
Helen delves into why we run, and also investigates the role that running has played in societies through the ages, and how it has been represented in culture and art.
A Netflix series I thoroughly enjoyed despite being the world’s slowest runner is Sprint, which gives a behind-the-scenes peek at the athletes and races of the 2023 Diamond League, 2023 World Athletics Championships and 2024 Olympic Games. Showcasing the intense rivalry between the US and Jamaica, the series had me out of my seat as I cheered for my namesake Shericka Jackson (you have to pick a favourite!), an unassuming Jamaican who’s the fifth fastest woman of all time in the 100m and the second fastest woman in history in the 200m. Surprisingly, there are more fabulous hairstyles and glamorous nails than Strictly Come Dancing – and not just among the women!
