The school that runs

A FACEBOOK POST ONE WINTRY DECEMBER EVENING CREATED A RUNNING CRAZE AT ONE BRISTOL SCHOOL, WHICH HAS LED TO EVERYONE FROM TEACHERS AND PARENTS TO PUPILS BENEFITING FROM RUNNING ‘S LIFE- AFFIRMING EFFECTS

SCHOOL RUNS

It’s a dilemma many parents face: how to prise their children away from their tablets and games consoles when they themselves are time-poor and feeling too frazzled to go for a run. But, at one school in Bristol, that all changed when a running-enthused teacher caused a running craze that saw the formation of not just one, but three, running groups, and hordes of children running every morning with their teachers as a matter of course.

So what turned Stanbridge Primary School into the school that runs? “It all started one cold, wet December night in 2015,” says James Baker, 43, who’s taught at the school for 19 years. “A friend and I decided to go for a run after work and used the school’s Facebook page to invite fellow runners. Four parents and teachers turned up for a jovial 5K. Numbers quickly swelled, to such an extent that, in addition to the Stanbridge Fliers, which has 50 members who run every Wednesday night, we founded the School Gates Running Group, which meets on Monday mornings. There’s also an oversubscribed Mini Fliers group, for ages seven to 11.”
