The 2016 Baillie Gifford Prize (formerly the Samuel Johnson Prize), given for the best nonfiction published in the UK by authors of any nationality, was awarded to human rights lawyer Philippe Sands for East West Street: On the Origins of Genocide and Crimes AgainstHumanity. The other titles on the shortlist were: Second-hand Time, Svetlana Alexievich, translated by Bela Shayevich; Negroland: A Memoir, Margo Jefferson and The Return: Fathers, Sons and The Land In Between, Hisham Matar.
