Think of a favourite place, perhaps from a holiday or maybe somewhere you went as a child. It may help if for a few minutes you shut your eyes and conjure up a memory of this particular place. Make a few notes about it – for instance, put down whether it was a place recently visited, and was it country or by the sea, or was it a town or a village?
In a few descriptive lines, put whether it was a cottage or house. Could it possibly have been a memory of a certain room or a building? An example of such a poem is by the poet RS Thomas, who writes about The Village in his poem with that title. Here are the opening lines:
