Max McMurdo takes us through three easy-to-make projects, from his latest book Upcycling, to show you how to turn items of junk into stylish pieces of furniture

The wash-drum table was the second item I ever made from junk. I’d seen the drums used in gardens as fire pits but I wanted to create something spectacular. The integrated light bulb creates beautiful streams of light through the original holes and a warm glow through the glass top.

Abrasive cleaning products designed for removing scratches from car paintwork are readily available and do a great job transforming old metalwork into a super-shiny state.

You will need

• old drum from a washing machine

• limescale remover

• lint-free cloth

• drill

• light fitting and bulb

• cable and switch

• rubber grommet

• metal strip for mount for bulb

• vice

• nuts and bolts

• washers

• hole saw

• metal threaded rods

• rigid cardboard

• pencil

• hacksaw or angle grinder

• glass – size and shape to order
