There are eight species of pangolin in total and they are commonly known as ‘scaly anteaters’. Four are native to Africa, the Black-Bellied Pangolin (Phataginus tetradactyla), White-Bellied Pangolin (Phataginus tricuspis), Giant Ground Pangolin (Smutsia gigantean) and Temmnick’s Ground Pangolin (Smutsia temminckii). The other species of pangolin are the Indian Pangolin (Manis crassicaudata), Philippine Pangolin (Manis culionensis), Sunda Pangolin (Manis javanica) and the Chinese Pangolin (Manis pentadactyla). Pangolin’s main predators are humans, with their scales being too tough for lions or tigers to crack. Their defence against predators such as lions is to roll up into a ball, but unfortunately this makes it easy for poachers to hunt them.
